A rare Chinese porcelain 'Lotus' bowl, Kangxi, white body and blue-toned glaze, brown line rim, the exterior with incised lotus scroll, the base marked in underglaze blue four character mark with double line square border 商山仿古 (Shang shan fang gu 'Shangshan imitating the ancient'), 19.2cm diameter, wood stand Provenance: From the collection of Sir David and Lady Scholey Shang Shan was the alias of Guo Pengling (1654-1722), whose ancestors were originally from Tai Yuan in north China but had moved to Yang Zhou along the Yangtze River. Guo became a jinshi (metropolitan graduate) in 1678 and took up various posts in civil service afterwards. He was remembered for his literary accomplishments, having produced several volumes including the Yinshan Tang Xinggao (Manuscript of the Yinshan Hall) and the Zhitang Shiji (Collected Poetry of the Fungus Hall). Compare with an almost identical bowl in the British Museum on display (G95/dc46/sh9) from the Sir Percival David Foundation, museum no. PDF,A.408.
