The blazon: argent, three battle axes sable (GIBBS) - impaling - erminois, on a fess azure between three cranes proper a saltire between two crosses-crosslet fitchee or (CRAWLEY) and on a chief ermine a bend gules charged with three guttes d'or between two martlets sable (BOEVEY) Crest: an arm embowed in armour proper garnished or holding in the gauntlet a poleaxe argent (GIBBS) William GIBBS (1790-1875) Esquire was born in Madrid the second son of Anthony GIBBS (1756-1815) from Clyst St Mary , Devon and Dorothea Barnetta HUCKS (1760-1820). Anthony GIBBS established in 1802 the British trading company Antony Gibbs & Sons, whose interests spanned trading in cloth, guano , wine and fruit, and led to it becoming involved in banking, shipping and insurance. William GIBBS married in 1839 Matilda Blanch CRAWLEY-BOEVEY daughter of Sir Thomas CRAWLEY-BOEVEY (1769-1847) 2nd Baronet and Albinia PAGE (died 1835). Although their principal residence was in London, William frequently travelled to Bristol to access the port their and in 1843 purchased an estate at Tyntes Place (Tyntesfield) Wraxall, North Somerset which throughout his life he continued to develop. The property is now owned by the National Trust.
