此畫創作之時，恰逢張大千藝術進程中極其重要的轉折之期。1932年，在蘇州網師園居住期間，張大千與書法家、收藏家葉恭綽成為摯友，亦受其鼓勵，開始學習工筆及人物畫。當時人物畫對張大千而言並非陌生，但其師古的早期作品以清朝人物畫風格為主導，線條傾向疲軟。葉恭綽鼓勵張大千去研習唐朝作品，尤其是其細緻、有力、典雅、輕似遊絲的線條，以專精人物畫。
