A George III mahogany serpentine chest of drawers, circa 1790, 86cm high, 111cm wide, 57cm deep Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use. Old chips and splits. some old repairs. some sections of replaced veneer. Good original surface, depth of colour and patina overall. Some fading to the top. Interior side of drawer fronts are covered with glued down newspaper. This may disguise/ cover holes from fixture of previous handles, however there are no additional holes or alternate holes to the drawer fronts. Evidence suggests that the current handdles have been in place for a significant period and may be original. Shadows/ build up of dirt/ colour adjacent support this. The current handles are high quality and unusual and suit the chest well. The locks to the drawer and of the period and steel. Two or more locks appear to be a period replacement though as the aperture cut for one lock is slightly larger than the lock itself. In addition the keys are present for the locks, however the key to the bottom drawer lock is an alternate key to that which operates the other lock. The brass keyhole escutcheon of the top and third drawers down is slightly different from the remainder as they protrude rather than being 'flush' to the surface of the drawer as the others are. The rear panels appear original. All of the feet have neatly executed old veneer repairs. These are very well matched old repairs in the main. Signs of later re-gluing to the underlying structure/ blocks of the feet and some glued and screwed later blocks to the underside of the chest and adjacent to the feet to secure. The main underlying structure of the feet appear original. Please refer to images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer
