harles Henry Chapin (American/Massachusetts, 1830-1889, act. New Orleans, 1882-1885) , "Bayou Landscape", pastel and watercolor on paper mounted to canvas, signed lower right, 25 in. x 30 in., framed. Note: Charles Henry Chapin arrived in New Orleans from New York in the winter of 1882, and he advertised as a painter of portraits and landscapes as well as a teacher. A well-traveled artist, Chapin had earned critical acclaim for his earlier landscapes of the Adirondack Mountains and Grand Canyon, along with his noted portrait of Polish actress Helena Modjeska in her role as Mary Queen of Scots. While in New Orleans, Chapin established a studio on Dryades Street and exhibited at W.E. Seebold's art gallery. He resided in New Orleans from 1882 to 1885 and took trips during this time period along the central and southern Gulf coast of Florida. As a landscape painter, Chapin was noted for his skill in oil as well as watercolor. In the painting offered here, he beautifully and adeptly captures the light reflected on the water as well as the luminosity of the distant horizon.
