4th-3rd millennium BC. A mixed group of four stone cylinder seals comprising two limestone and two jasper; two accompanied by a museum-quality impression and typed and signed scholarly note issued by W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: (1) 'Cylinder Seal of Brown Stone 18.5 x 17 mm. The design is a frieze of two items: stylized versions of water creatures such as crabs. Their bodies are rendered with deep ovals with surrounding lines, and from those lines further lines at right angles mark legs. This comes from Sumer, the Diyala valley or south-west Iran, and dates to c. 3000 B.C. It is fair condition [sic] with some wear on one side, but the design remains clear.' (2) 'Cylinder Seal of Brown Stone 29 x 13 mm. The design is a frieze made out of a running fox or other animal, three dots and three dots in circles filling spaces. This comes from Iran or west central Asia and is a very rare type not easily dated, but perhaps c. 3000-2500 B.C. The seal is very worn, but the design has survived remarkably well.' 34 grams total, 19-30mm (3/4 - 1 1/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item number 1803, T-295, W-385, W-481; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; accompanied by two original typed and signed scholarly notes by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert.[4]
