故宫的铜狮共有6处，分设各重要宫殿门前，不但造型生动，栩栩如生，而且每对均左为雄狮，伸出右脚正在玩弄绣球；右为雌狮，伸出左脚爱护逗幼狮。这种大铜狮，是故宫皇权至高无上的象征，负责镇守皇宫，辟邪驱恶。其造型精美，与故宫的建筑及陈设协调相称，彰显了故宫的高大、华丽、雄伟、庄严。
此件乾隆朝官造掐丝珐琅雄狮，作张口露齿，咆哮怒吼状。颈上有鬃，颈下系铃和璎珞，只爪强劲有力，望之凶猛威严，不可一世。
掐丝珐琅狮子在已知的报道中，只有法国枫丹白露宫有一只麒麟，台湾故宫有一对，2020年嘉德春拍拍出一对掐丝珐琅狮子，在所有的狮子中，这只的造型更优美，做工更精细，是一件上乘的艺术珍品。
