A RARE SPANISH PAINTED AND GILT WOOD BASE OF A RELIC, late 16th/early 17th century. Softwood, the top gilt and polychromy painted with four round medals depicting the pelican and her young. The four sides with fine and detailed grisaille paintings, depicting scenes of the Passion of Christ: Entry into Jerusalem, The Moundy, The Last Supper and The Agony in the Garden. On the top mostly original gilding and colours with retouches, the grisaille with retouches and gilding in the edges later. On the inner side of the top of the quadratic base, an inscribed parchment paper is attached that was, according to the previous owner, examined with a sonde: "Estas andas y peana hico drego de madeira y las pinto/Erremes als hiconse (?) acosta de dona/Ijsabel de Spinossa mon (...)/monasterio de santa ysabel desta villa de valla(..) acabaronse AD/y sey del mar.. del ano del Senor de mil y quinientos y noventa/tres anos/Lausdeo (?)" - roughly translated: This bier and this rich wood base painted by Erreme(s/j)al hiconse on commission of Dona Isabel de Espinosa, ...in the monastery of St. Isabel in this city Valla(dolid) and completed 6. Jahrhundert 9x30,5x30,5 cm Rechteckiger Sockel mit leicht überlappenden Kanten aus Nadelholz. An der Oberseite reiche Vergoldung auf rotem Bolus mit gravierten Sonnenmotiven, an den Seiten polychrome Temperamalerei mit Pelikan-Darstellung in Rundmedaillons. Die Seiten etwas später verziert mit Szenen aus der Passion Christi in feiner Grisaillemalerei: Ankunft in Jerusalem, Die Fußwaschung, Das letzte Abendmahl, Jesus im Garten Getsemane. Auf der Innenseite des oberen Teils ist ein beschriftetes Pergament fixiert, welches (laut Angaben den Vorbesitzers) mit einer Sonde abgelesen wurde: "Estas andas y peana hico drego de madeira y las pinto/Erremes als hiconse (?) acosta de dona/Ijsabel de Spinossa mon (...)/monasterio de santa ysabel desta villa de valla(..) acabaronse AD/y sey del mar.. del ano del Senor de mil y quinientos y noventa/tres anos/Lausdeo". In der freien Übersetzung: Diese Bahre und reich (verzierter) Sockel aus Holz wurde bemalt von Erreme(s/j) al hiconse auf Kosten von Dona Isabella de Espinosa im Kloster der Heiligen Isabel dieser Stadt Valla(dolid) und wurde komplettiert 6. März im Jahr 1593 unseres Herrn. Alterssch. Übermalungen, partiell neu vergoldet. Provenienz: Wohl ehemals aus dem Kloster Santa Isabel in Valladolid (siehe Hinweis auf dem alten Pergament). Bei dem hervorragend gearbeiteten Stück handelt es sich wohl um den Stand eines Reliquars oder eines Reliquienkreuzes, welches nicht mehr vorhanden ist. Die Inschrift auf dem Pergament im Inneren weist auf einen "reichen Sockel" aber auch auf eine "Bahre" hin. Valladolid wurde Kastilische Hauptstadt zur Zeit der Hochzeit von Fernando von Aragón und Isabel von Kastilien im Jahr 1469 und etwickelte sich zu einem reichen Zentrum für Kunst, vor allem die Skulpturen aus Valladolid sind weltweit bekannt. Von großem Reichtum zeugt auch die Grabkapelle der dort ansässigen Familie de Espinosa, sicherlich Verwandte der auf dem als "Spenderin" erwähnte Isabel de Espinosa.
