C. 1100-1300 AD. Byzantine. A gorgeous pair of gold pendant earrings each comprising a rounded hoop from which hangs a net of sixteen rings which in turn support three blue and green gemstones. Two stylised geometric birds perch inside each of the two hoops. Byzantium was justly famous for the elegance of its jewellery, whether in precious metals for the aristocracy, or in bronze for people further down the social ladder. This item probably belonged to a Byzantine noblewoman.
