ca. 1100 AD. Seljuk. This decorated terracotta-coloured jug was probably made under the Seljuk dynasty. It comprises a slightly flaring rim, straight neck, globular body and ring base; a strap handle attaches below the shoulder and at the rim. The body is ornamented in numerous applied raised dots, while the shoulders are covered in horizontal ridges. Traces of green, possibly from glazing, are visible across much of the jug. The Seljuks were a Turkic dynasty who swept out of Central Asia in the early 10th century and conquered an enormous expanse, covering most or all of present-day Turkmenistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey and beyond. After inflicting crushing military defeats on a host of rivals, the most famous of which was perhaps that against the Byzantines at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, the Seljuk sultans became major patrons of art and architecture. This lamp is a beautiful example of Seljuk art. Excellent condition. Size: L:160mm / W:115mm ; 430g. Provenance: Property of a North London gentleman; previously acquire on the UK/European art market in the 1990s.
