此物由18颗和田玉珠穿制而成，古时十八子手串多采用珊瑚、翡翠、玛瑙、碧玺、蜜蜡、水晶、绿松石等名贵材质制成，色泽艳丽、雕工精湛，富贵无比，不仅富有装饰效果又便于携带，因此是宫廷富贵人家非常喜欢佩戴的装饰物。手持属佛珠的一种。一般选用十八颗小圆珠，中间加两颗精致大气的佛头、一佛头塔和坠脚组成，故又称为十八子。清代以来，因材质、色泽、雕工的精美，手串已成为文人祈福纳祥、把玩珍赏之物，也是互相馈赠的礼品。古时佩带手串，穿对襟衣时，挂在第二颗纽扣上；穿大褂衣时，则挂在腋上方的襟钮上，也可挽在手腕或握于手中。
