Description

Circle of Quentin Matsys the Elder, Flemish 1466-1530- Ecce Homo; oil on panel, 80.5x57.5cm Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 12th September 2019, lot 108 Note: Matsys's most well-known work is the 'The Ugly Duchess' (1515), his other satirical works include; 'A Portrait of an Elderly Man' (1513), and 'The Money Changer and His Wife' (1514), all focusing on the concept of human emotion and society. He also painted religious altarpieces and triptych panels, the most famous of which was built for the Church of Saint Peter in Leuven. The panel is constructed of two vertically joined planks, and is uncradled. There appears to have been a degree of historic movement along the join of this plank, if not a complete split. There is glue along the join visible along the back. There used to be three horizontal battens adhered to the reverse which are now no longer. The join is less visible from the front but discoloured retouchings along that line are apparent. There are some chips and losses to the top left and right hand side of the panel, some frame abrasion across the upper margin, a minor surface split three inches in length running vertically from the lower left edge, and a slight degree of wear visible in the flesh tones of the two protagonists. There are no major damages visible to the naked eye, but there are some discoloured old retouchings visible throughout. Inspection under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouchings down the panel join and to the crack at the lower left. Further retouches are visible in the chest of Christ and to the sky and arch of the upper right corner. The varnish fluoresces opaque making early restoration hard to see, but it should be assumed that there are further retouchings beneath the varnish. Offered in a gilt tabernacle style carved wooden frame with some chips and losses.
