Property of a London collector, acquired early 1990s. In the style of the so called Celtic heads this image bears the typical features of such carvings such as the almond shaped eyes, heart shaped face and simply carved features. Heads such as these are found predominantly in Northern England and are believed to be a remnant of the pagan Celtic cult of the head. They are sometimes found in churches but more often buried in fields or built into boundary walls and would seem to have a protective role over land and livestock. See More
