NOTE: In 1968 sculptor Louise Nevelson conceived of "Zags," wall-mounted wooden reliefs that she constructed out of different sized boxes, filled with machined objects, and spray-painted black. In their complex arrangement of geometric shapes, the Zags reference Cubist collages, Maya steles, and urban architecture. While her contemporaries David Smith and Donald Judd were creating streamlined metallic sculptures, Nevelson favored materials and forms that evoke personal, even domestic environments: wooden balusters, finials, spindles, and children's building blocks. The black color of the Zags not only unifies the composition, but also suggests a psychological state of mind.
