A COLONIAL MAP, "Amerique Septentrionale," PARIS, CIRCA 1783, hand colored engraving on paper, attributed as a third edition, sixth impression French printing of The Mitchell Map, published by cartographer and geographical engineer to King Louis XV, George-Louis le Rouge (German/French 1712-1790), originally compiled by Dr. John Mitchell (American 1711-1768) with contribution by M. Hawkins (active 1776-1792), "...avec les routes, Distances en miles, villages et establishments François et Anglois," the upper left with view of, "Nouvelle Carte de la Baye d'Hudson et de Labrador," in the lower right a rococo figural title cartouche with colonial architecture, a bay surrounds a double masted schooner, the shoreline filled with strapped wooden barrels, a waterfall frames the New England scene, while two busy putti collect clams or scallops, below a snarling beaver bears his teeth, crouching on a mossy grotto scroll whereupon a prayerful male kneels gazing upward at the right of a seated female personification who wears a pearl necklace with emerald cut gemstone pendant and grasps a recurve bow, gesturing to her heart, and at her back a quiver of arrows and stalks of corn flanked by coconut trees rise above the personifications of North America, a French shield upheld in the arms of cherubs among billowing clouds; the whole with detailed notes of boundary and territory changes, referencing old maps, various tribes, indigenous and settler skirmishes, the limitations of known lands, mountain ranges, and a legend lists cities with capitals, towns, indigenous forts and villages, military fortifications, fortified colonies, religious establishments, common travel routes, water rapids, and dessert villages; the whole overlaid with latitudinal and longitudinal lines, with two compass roses. 53" x 76 1/2" Note: A note in the map indicates the use of a copy of this map in the Treaty of Paris 1783, which formally ended the American Revolutionary War, and acknowledged the United States' existence as free, sovereign, and independent states.
