Lombardischer Meister des 15. Jahrhunderts
CROSS TRANSMISSION CHRISTI
Oil on wood. Two parquet strips on verso.
57 x 47 cm.
By enclosed expertise, besides mentioning other masters, attributed to Francesco da Milano (active between 1502-1548). The enclosed expertise in copy by Emilio Negro, Bologna (n.y.), places the work in the first half of the 16th century and refers to the influence of Giovanni Bellini (1430-1516) and Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). Bernardo Zenale (c. 1436-1526), Vincenzo Civerchio (c. 1470-1544), and Francesco da Milano, especially with regard to the painting style, are named as the creators of the painting. Among the painters mentioned in the report, we should also mention Bernardino Butinone (c. 1436- c. 1507), whose "Madonna and Child" of c. 1490 in the Pinacoteca di Brera shows considerable similarities with this work. Butinone was a pupil of Vincenzo da Foppa (c. 1425-1516) and Bernardo Zenale. In any case, the authorship of the painting presented here may still require some clarification in art studies.
Jesus in the half-portrait to the left with a bright red mocking cloak with gold border. The face slightly turned back towards the observer, in both hands the cross-beam, around the neck a rope pulling to the left. Above the hair the crown of thorns, which stands out only slightly in colour from the dark under- and background. At the sides and above the head ornamentally designed cross-rays in shell gold. In spite of what is happening in the face an expression of mild comfort for the observer. (1221501) (11)
