According to legend, the queen of Egypt and companion of Caesar's successor Antonius dissolved a pearl in wine as a love potion for Antonius. The scene, depicted several times in the fine arts, has been captured here by the painter in a strongly psychological way: She is shown in the half-portrait, holding the pearl in her right hand and the wine bowl in her left, at the same time with a suspiciously inquiring gaze that seems to be looking at the surroundings. The wine bowl in the typical shape of baroque wine tasting bowls. In keeping with the theme, the Pharaoh's daughter also wears pearls in her hair.
