AN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN CARVED AND PAINTED LIMESTONE PORTRAIT HEAD OF A ROYAL PRINCESS, POSSIBLY OLD KINGDOM, 6TH DYNASTY, CIRCA 2345 - 2181 BC, wearing a finely sculpted zig-zag patterened wig centering a remnant of the uraeus diadem, above delicate facial features, with traces of black pigment in crevices of hair and outlining the elegant eye details, mounted on a modern gilt metal stand. Height: 3 3/4" Note: The fine yet minimal details found in this head are idealized yet represent such unique features that it represents a person. The combination of the short wig style (popular during the 6th Dynasty), makeup lines, Uraeaus remnant and the careful attention to physical details point to that of a young princess or concubine of the 6th Dynasties Old Kingdom period. Provenance: Purchased from Le Pere Associates, New York, New York circa 1985; by decent current owner Houston, Texas.
