19th century AD. A rectangular icon painted in tempera on a wooden panel with mounting slots to the reverse, depicting the Holy Family of Joseph, Anna, Mary, all nimbate and standing in draped robes within a panelled room, the infant Jesus held by the bearded nimbate figure of Simeon; Cyrillic notation within each nimbus. See Weizmann, K. et al. The Icon, New York, 1982. 3.5 kg, 53cm (21"). From the private collection of a Croatian professor; acquired on the European art market. Simeon the God-receiver was the 'just and devout' man of Jerusalem who, according to Luke 2:25–35, met Mary, Joseph and Jesus as they entered the temple to fulfil the requirements of the Law of Moses on the 40th day from Jesus's birth at the presentation of Jesus at the temple.
