Description

Late 3rd-early 2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of ten bronze seals of various shapes and designs including five accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (V-898) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 36 x 36 x 11mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a small circle within a start with six points within a plain outer band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a nice example of its kind and in good condition save for some denting and damage to the outer rim.'; (T-775) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 31 x 28 x 27 x 24mm. This is shaped like a trefoil, and that is what is the design of the seal, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a stalk handle with pierced loop top. The design is enclosed within an outer rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. there is a little corrosion on the surface, which could be removed, and the rim is worn at on of the tips, but generally the piece is in very good condition.'; (T-467) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 33.5 x 33 x 15mm. This has the shape of a formee cross with struts joining the tips of the arms. The face is compartmented and open-work, and the back is flat, with a handle of inverted V-shape. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. it is in good condition save that two of the four struts are missing.': (T-446) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 25 x 16 x 21mm. This has the shape of the design, with flat compartmented face, and flat back on which is mounted a handle of stalk type with loop on top. The design consists of a central oblong, from each side of which spreads out a crescent shape. this comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. It is covered with incrustation, which could be removed, and two of the crescents are now damaged, but the metal is in good condition.'; (T-430) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22.5 x 22 x 24mm. This has a flat, round face, and back which rises to a stalk handle surmounted with a pierced oval top. The design on the face consists of raised lines within an outer rim. They are two curving strokes, one based on the rim, the other not, and two filling strokes from the edge. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The piece is covered with incrustation, which could be removed, but the metal underneath is apparently in good condition. The rim is worn down.' 133 grams total, 22.5-37mm (1-1 1/2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers 252, 231, T-430, T-775, T-446, T-467, Y-920, U-282, V-883, V-898, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
