Description

Late 3rd-early 2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of five bronze seals comprising: one discoid with openwork design of central circle from which two arms extend, together forming an S-shape, surrounded by a border of circles; one roughly square in shape with curved sides and compartmented floral; and three accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (T-96) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 51 x 49 x 13mm. This is round with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a central small square joined to an outer band by four lines from the centre of each side of the square, and by four groups of struts, 12 in all, in four groups of three: one from each corner of the square, the other two to each side of it, the four lines from the centre of the square are supported by two struts forming a V-shape. The outer band is plain, but divided into four segments by short lines. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The outer rim is worn down, and the handle is broken, otherwise the piece is in fair condition. The incrustation on the surface could be removed.'; (T-487) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze 43 x 39 x 17mm. This has the shape of what is depicted, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design is compartmented, and may be depicting a standing quadruped. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a rare and interesting design, but the placing of the handle leads to the conclusion that a part is missing, perhaps the head of a stylised quadruped. What is present is generally in good condition.'; (51) 'Compartmented Stamp Seal of Bronze, 65 x 16mm. This is round, with an inverted V-shaped handle on the back. The seal is openwork as well as compartmented, and the design is a pattern. the circle is divided into four quarters by lines which cross in the middle. Around the centre are four rough squares, and from the outer corner of each, and from spaced points along the rim, giving an impression of four equal quarters, but in fact each one is slightly different. The rim around the circle is the inner side of an outer band, of which the outer edge is scalloped. This is a seal from west-central Asia, c. 2200-2000 B.C. There is slight damage to the outer edge but generally the seal is in very good condition, though the original patina has gone.' 123 grams total, 44-63mm (1 3/4-2 1/2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers U-127, Y-265, T-487, T-960, 51, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
