Rare, Chinese Han Dynasty Period, Gilt silver inlaid censer. Chinese gilt silver tripod Censer in watermelon shaped, in a cupped body, wide circular opening, short neck, globular body, slightly oval, with dome lid reverse bowl, light short finial round bud, and raised on three cabriole supports and is flat-cast on the sides with a ring banded on the center body. The exterior delicately decorated in variegate archaic auspicious patterns that create taotie masks. The taotie mask can resemble protection or be a representation of the forces of nature. It has served as a warning against greediness, gluttony, sensuality, self-indulgence in Chinese culture. Silver is in gorgeous condition with minimal marring of the surface.
