Zhao Gang (b. 1961) Untitled (Mao and Comrade), 2007 Acrylic on linen 51-1/4 x 61 inches (130.2 x 154.9 cm) Signed and dated on the reverse: Gang Zhao / 07. PROVENANCE: Private collection, New York. NOTE: Zhao Gang is a key figure in the development of contemporary Chinese art and the youngest member of the celebrated ‘Stars Group' founded in the early 1980s in Beijing—he is among the first Chinese artists dedicated to the modern art movement in his native soil. In 1983, Zhao Gang left China to study, live and work in Europe and the United States. In 2007, he returned to his homeland to focus on his art. Over time Zhao Gang has developed a dynamic and provocative painting style that combines Western and Eastern influences. His ever-expanding practice demonstrates a range subject matter that includes political figures and famous idols to wild eroticism and strange deconstructed landscapes—his works make references to ancient and modern art history alike.
