Harrison, William Henry. Partially printed DS "Willm Henry Harrison" while serving as Governor of Indiana Territory and of the District of Louisiana, 1p, 12.25 x 7.5 in., Vincennes, Indiana Territory, October 1, 1804. A scarce document from the year immediately following the Louisiana Purchase during which the United States attempted to establish American rule and institutions in the young country's vast new lands. This document reflects the newness of the Louisiana Purchase as a handwritten notation is necessary to update Harrison's designation as Governor and Commander in Chief of the Indiana Territory "and of the District of Louisiana."  Appointed by President John Adams as Governor of the Indiana Territory in 1800, Harrison was assigned in 1804 the additional responsibility of administering the civilian government of the District of Louisiana. This document appoints Andrew Wilson of the District of New Madrid to the office of Recorder with Harrison, a future President, signing off as Governor. Verso is docketed "New Madrid November 26th 1805" with a note from Richard J. Waters, one of the first justices in New Madrid, certifying that Wilson took "the Oath of Office and Fidelity Allegiance" according to law.
