Lot of 2 19th century tokens from Charleston, SC.Brass patriotic token, 0.75 in. dia. Obverse with crops displayed under a palmetto tree and text reading, "No Submission To The North / 1860," while reverse features central rice, tobacco, sugarcane, and cotton, identified below, with "The Wealth of the South" written above.Trade token, 1 in. dia., with silhouette of standing auctioneer holding a gavel on obverse surrounded by text reading, "W.W. Wilbur Auction & Commission Merchant / Charleston. So. Ca / 1846." Stylized palmetto tree to reverse at center with concentric text reading, "Merchants & Manufacturers Agent / Collection broker Notary Public &c." William W. Wilbur, a man of varied entrepreneurial pursuits, issued these tokens during a coin shortage to promote his business. In addition to sales of real estate, dry goods, and household items, Wilbur also transacted sales of slaves, as evidenced by newspaper ads from the 1850s.
