Partially printed field parole, issued to "Priv. D.W. Dill, Co. H, 10th N.C. Inf.," 1p, 7.625 x 4.125 in., Raleigh, NC. May 13, 1865. Signed by P.C. Hays as Lieutenant Colonel and Provost Marshal General, Army of the Ohio, in accordance with the terms of a military convention between General Joseph E. Johnston and Major General William Tecumseh Sherman, following Johnston's surrender to Sherman's forces at Bennett Place, Durham, NC on April 26, 1865. Previously, Johnston had met with Confederate President Jefferson Davis, who authorized him to begin peace negotiations with Sherman. Their initial terms of surrender were remarkably lenient towards southerners and were rejected in Washington, DC. Sherman and Johnston reconvened and ultimately reached a more stringent agreement, though Confederate officers and men could still be paroled, provided they swear an oath not to take up arms against the United States. David W. Dill, a blacksmith from Carteret County, NC, had already been paroled once under an exchange in August 1862, following his capture at Fort Macon, NC.Â
