§ Mary Potter, OBE (British, 1900-1981) House by the Sea (Alde House, Aldeburgh) oil on canvas 71 x 127cm (28 x 50in) Exhibited: London, The Whitechapel Gallery, Retrospective show, 1964, cat.no.112 Other Notes: Alde House was previously the residence of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (1836-1917), having been built for her father, Newson L. Garrett. She was a key figure in the Suffragette movement and a champion of women's rights. She was the first woman in Britain to qualify as a physician and surgeon in Britain and co-founded the first hospital staffed by women. She was also the Mayor of Aldeburgh and as such, was the first female mayor and magistrate in Britain. Oil on canvas which is float mounted in the frame. There are localised areas of raised and flaking paint with scattered losses. There are some chips and losses to the frame.
