I shall catch the 10.10am on Saturday morning from Kings X, which arrives at Leeds at 1.58 + then there's a train at 2.2 arriving Castleford 2.40 I'm coming early because I should like to have a look round Castleford, it's so many years since I was last there. Thank you for inviting me to be your guest for the night. I'm so looking forward very much to my visit. Yr sincerely Henry Moore' an accompanying autographed letter from Moore from the same address reads, Dear Mrs Waring, I've just come across this little sketch of goats, in a very old note-book of 1923. You said you'd like something. Thank you very much for putting me up when I came to Castleford + for the very nice time I had + thank you for sending me the Express with an account of the reunion in it. Yours sincerely Henry Moore'. Envelope dated 29th March 1938 15.50 x 21cm (6 x 8in) Provenance: Property of the artist Gifted by him to Mrs Gladys Waring, circa 1938 Thence by family descent to the present owner Other Notes: Gladys Atkinson Waring, nee Lawson, and Henry Moore were both students together at Castleford Grammar School. Moore was accepted into the school on his second attempt in 1910 after winning a scholarship. It was here that Moore was encouraged by the art teacher to broaden his knowledge of art, whilst the headmaster of the school noticed that the young student had an interest in medieval sculpture. In 1938, Henry Moore went to stay with Gladys and her husband in Castleford. It was following this visit that Moore sent the sketch as a gift to his old school friend. It was on the retirement in 1939 of Miss I. Woodward, senior mistress of Castleford Grammar School, that the two would meet again. A photograph of the occasion appeared in The Express and shows the two standing next to each other (the image was reproduced in The Express in 1959 and a copy is included). Wrapped in conservation paper - unframed. Sketch with two fold creases and small tear along a fold, another nick to an edge. Letter previously folded twice. Postcard franked 15 March 1938 a little age stained near the edges. With a contemproary newspaper cutting showing Moore with Mrs Waring and others.
