1897年3月日本国会通过台湾银行法，11月成立台湾银行创立委员会，开始展开筹备台湾银行的工作。1899年3月日本政府修改台湾银行法，日本政府以100万元为额度，认购台湾银行股份，同年6月正式成立“株式会社台湾银行”，同年9月26日开始营业。直至日据时期结束之前，台湾银行则一直扮演发行日本总督府通行货币“银圆”、“金圆”的关键性角色。台湾第一张纸钞应该是台湾银行于1899年9月发行的壹圆银券。1946年5月20日南京国民政府专案核准台湾银行复业，资本额则定为旧台币六千万元。随后该行以原本日据时期所有据点，担任全台湾的金融龙头，发行区域性的“（旧）台币”业务。1949年6月15日旧台币被台湾政府发行的金圆券拖垮，导致恶性通货膨胀，为稳定物价，台湾银行奉台湾政府指示发行新台币，流通至今。
