Anthony Van Dyck, copy after, Portrait of Prince Thomas Franz von Savoyen Carignan on Horseback
Our painting is a reduced and slightly modified copy after van Dyck's late work of 1634/35, which is now in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin and measures 315 x 236 cm. Further, large-sized copies after this equestrian portrait are known, e.g. in Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire. The painter of our picture, besides changes in the scenic background, especially did without the monumental columns and a green curtain drapery in the right half of the picture, which seemed less appropriate in the smaller format.
Thomas Franz of Savoy-Carignan was the younger brother of Duke Victor Amadeus I of Savoy. From his father he received 1625 as Apanage the principality Carignan and became thus the founder of the secondary line Savoyen-Carignan. In the same year he married in Paris the French princess Marie de Bourbon-Condé. Thomas Franz pursued a military career and fought first on the Spanish side and later on the French side.
