玉斧出現於新石器時代的晚期，雖然不能用於實戰，但其在精神意義上代表了軍權，為氏族酋長或部落首領執掌王權的象徵物，後古人用作裝飾品，視為一種身份的象徵，擁有玉斧之人，往往同時擁有調兵之權。除了斧以外，玉器中另有鉞、戚、鏟之類的器物，其實這些也都是斧的派生，都象徵軍權。此玉斧為扁平長條梯形，中間略厚，兩端薄，頂部出刃。整件器物整體呈墨綠色，玉質老熟，細膩緻密，局部帶石灰白沁、淺土黃沁。上端一鑽孔，孔內留有出坑原土。側邊略有損傷，損傷處包漿油潤，可見本器歷史之悠久。〔參閱〕1.龍山文化玉鏟，L:15.5cm，現藏河南博物院。2.巴黎蘇富比，2016/12/15，Lot35，龍山文化雙孔玉斧，16.7cm，EUR 35,000。
