Album with Twelve Illustrations for Ten Stories of the Liaozhai zhiyi (Curious Stories from the Study of Leisure, by Pu Songling, 1640-1715), China, 18th/19th ct., illustrations each 18,2 x 16,3 cm, ink and colors on silk. Album label: "Complete Illustrations to the Liaozhai, volume 55". The book 'Curious Stories from the Study of leisure' (Liaozhai zhiyi) is a collection of about five hundred short ghost stories compiled by Pu Songling. It is extraordinary popular to this day and there exist many editions of it. This album is part of a quite luxurious edition with the stories handwritten in fine standard script on gold speckled paper accompanied by very fine illustrations in a detailed style with opaque colors. The faces and garments are shaded in a naturalistic manner and buildings are depicted with the influence of Western perspective. Mostly one illustration accompanies one story, only the first story in this album takes three pages of text and also three illustrations - Provenance: German private collection since the 1960's with the present owner - Minor wear, partly stained, very minor damages due to age.
