A WOOD AND IVORY NETSUKE OF SHOKI AND ONI IN A DRU…A WOOD AND IVORY NETSUKE OF SHOKI AND ONI IN A DRUM BY SHOKOBy Shoko, wood and ivory netsukeJapan, Meiji period (1868-1912)The demon queller Shoki is grimly peeking out of a war drum and holding a club, while an oni is shown hiding in one of the openings of the drum, also armed with a club. The two are engaged in a cat and mouse game, and as usual Shoki will probably leave empty-handed. Shoki and the oni are inlaid in ivory, as well as the ends of the drum which are incised with mitsudomo-e symbols. The han-dle and the sides of the drum skin are inlaid in horn. The underside with small himotoshi and signature SHOKO 尚古HEIGHT 3.5 cmProvenance: The 40-Year Collection of a London Gentleman. condition: A section of inlay is lost, minor imperfections, otherwise good condition.
