任伯年作为海派绘画的代表性人物，在近现代美术史中，承上启下的重要地位不言而喻。他凭借自己的艺术天赋集众家之长，确立了海派前期以继承明清传统为主，偏重勾勒装饰、没骨点染的主要艺术特征，将多种技法结合的笔墨技巧、设色技巧提高到较为完满的境界，形成海派前期清新明丽、放达飘逸的色彩风格。此幅《玉兰双吉图》创作于1895年的上海，这时的任伯年风变得更加大胆简约自然，技法也达到了炉火纯青的境地。整个作品面貌明快而自由，笔力纵肆，格调清新高古，墨法简逸，设色轻灵。
