A long Chinese 19th century blue ground silk hanging with gold thread five claw dragons holding pearls. 171cm x 45cm. Provenance: Property of Pierce Essex O'Brien Butler born 1858. He entered the Consular service in 1880 and appointed Consul for the district of then 'Wenchow' China 13th May 1899. Appointed Consul for the Province of Chinkiang (Zhejiang) 5th April 1902. District of Amoy (Xiamen) 8th May 1906. Consul General for the Province ofSichuan 1st September 1908 residing in Chengdu. Appointed Consul General for theProvincesof Yunnan and Kweichow (Guizhou) 21st January 1909 residing in Yunnan-Fu (Kunming). AppointedConsul General Yunnan-Fu 20th January 1911. Appointed Consul General Mukden (Shenyang) 1st October 1912 residing in Mukden. Re-appointed Consul General in Mukden March 9th 1914.Items brought to the UK in 1920's and kept in the family's private possession. 95cm length
