A lead-alloy disc with stamped design to each face: the obverse with sword between keys in a pelleted ring and legend 'PETRI/ET.PA[...]' (Peter and Paul); reverse with raised triangle (facing bust?) in a pelleted ring with legend '+ ET S' SWIThVN[.]' (and seal of Swithun"). 10 grams, 3cm (1 1/4"). Found Hampshire, UK. Saint Swithun was a 9th century bishop of Winchester, Hampshire. He was adopted as patron of the church at Winchester after its restoration in the 10th century, previously dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. His body was moved from its outdoor grave to Æthelwold's basilica on 15 July 971 and, according to contemporary accounts, various miracles preceded and followed the move. His feast day (15th July) is associated with the weather-lore proverb that if it rains on St. Swithun's day, it will rain for 40 days after. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
