Late 2nd-early 1st millennium BC. A sheet bronze libation horn or rhyton with three circumferential sheet silver bands to the body; silver rim overlapping a discoid cap with crouching lion figure modelled in the round on a rectangular plaque; mounted on a custom-made stand. See Muscarella, O.W. Bronze and Iron. Ancient Near Eastern Artifacts in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1988 for discussion. 2.3 kg including stand, 30cm (12"). On the London art market since 2005; with Pierre Bergé & Associés, Archéologie, Paris, 21 May 2014, lot 109 (50,000-55,000 euros); previously in a private collection, 1980s; accompanied by copies of the relevant Pierre Bergé catalogue pages.
