|ProvenanceArthur, Lord Baldwin of Bewdley.Gifted as a wedding present to the mother of the present owner.ExhibitedLondon, Dowdeswell Galleries, Works by Sir Philip Burne-Jones, Bt., April-May 1914.Arthur Baldwin (1904-1976), the original owner of the present lot, was the son of Stanley Baldwin (1867-1947), who served three separate terms as British Prime Minister. Stanley Baldwin's wife, Lucy (née Risdale) was the great-great-aunt of the present owner. The Burne-Jones and Baldwin families were related by marriage; Arthur Baldwin's grandfather married Louisa Macdonald, whose own sister Georgiana Macdonald married Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones. Rottingdean, the location of the church in the present lot, draws together the history of the Ridsdale, Burne-Jones and Baldwin families, all of whom lived in the village. Another view of the Church, painted by Philip Burne-Jones in 1891, was exhibited alongside the present lot at the Dowdeswell Galleries exhibition in 1914.
