AN INDIAN COPPER BRONZE ALLOY FIGURE OF VISHNU, 18th – 19th CENTURY Cast and chased copper and bronze alloy Southern India, 18th – 19th century Standing in samapada on a double lotus pedestal atop a square base, the four-armed Vishnu shows the hand gestures of vitarka mudra. One of his main attributes, the conch can be seen in his right lower hand and the other, the chakra is at the back of his head. The figure is adorned with jewelry characteristic of south Indian bronzes and wears a tall mitered headdress. A small, kneeling Garuda figure is applied to the front of the pedestal.
