A RARE WUCAI 'MYTHICAL BEAST' BARREL-SHAPED JAR, China, Wanli six-character mark in underglaze-blue and of the period. The exterior with slightly rounded sides, freely decorated with a continuous landscape of pines and rocks with four one- and two-horned qilin in green and blue, at the bottom with a border of stylised lotus scrolls, at the top with a border of coin diapers. - By repute inventoried in the porcelain gallery at palace Berlin-Charlottenburg around 1835, rng.no. 95, alcove left of the chimney, since the 1920s property of the present owners - Cf. to another coverless jar, but with dragons, in the Metropolitan Museum, exhibited in "A Selection of Chinese Ceramics from the Adele and Stanley Herzman Collection", 1 June - 26 Aug 1990; Jars with covers with identical decor were sold at: Sotheby's HK, 1 Nov 1994, lot 54; Bonhams London, 7 Nov 2013, lot 215; Sotheby's HK, 5 Oct 2016, lot 110 - Slightly polished, Minor firing crack to the rim
