In the Style of Jin Nong (1687-1763), The Sixteen Luohan Crossing the Sea on Mythical Animals, China, 18th/19th ct., handscroll, 29 x 213 cm, ink and colors on paper. Signature at the end of the scroll: "Respectfully painted by Jiliu shanmin Jin Nong". Two seals of the artist: "Jin Nong yinxin", "Shoumen". One collector's seal at the beginning of the scroll: "Lu. Chen shi zhencang". After the painting three colophones by Fa Shishan (1753-1813), dated 1807, Zhu Renfeng and Wang Gong (18./19. Jh.), likewise dated 1807. Jin Nong, style names Shoumen and Jiliu shanmin, belongs to the group of the so called Eight Eccentrics from Yangzhou. These painters were active in Yangzhou, the city of rich salt merchants. They all developed a highly individual and unique style. The Luohans and their curious beasts depicted in this handscroll are likewise done with a certain humoristic touch, most notable are the two dancing attendants balancing two cymbals on their thumbs and the flying bee at the beginning of the scroll. The Luohans ride on tigers, dragons and camels, some on Qilins, a water buffalo and a tree shrub. Most spectacular is a huge white elephant carrying three Luohans discussing and reading books on his back. Jin Nong used to live in Buddhist monasteries and besides painting themes like flowers also did some Buddhist figure paintings. This highly original scroll with fine line drawing and expressive faces is of later execution - Property from an important German private collection, collected prior 1990 - Very minor damages and restorations
