A FINE AND RARE THANGKA OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI AND THE 4th MYRICAL OF SHRAVASTI, Central Tibet, 18th ct., framed under glass. This rare and important painting shows Buddha resting on a wide altar throne, in a park of pavilions, houses covered in gold, in front of a wide mountainous landscape. He is dressed in precious garments, sitting in his traditional pose on a moon lotus, attended by King Indrawami holding the golden Dharmacakra, and his spouse. Opposite to them, Bodhisattva Padmapani appears holding a lotus branch, with monks and and worshippers presenting food and sacrifices of the royal couple. At the lower corners, 'false teachers' can be seen with ruffled long hair and barely clothed. - Published: D. I.
