Eduardo Kingman Ink Painting Head in Hands 1964: Eduardo Kingman Riofrio (Ecuadorian, 1913 - 1997), 1964, ink on paper depicting the image of a person holding their head in the large, sculptural hands that the artist is known for. Signed and dated on the face by the artist. Dimensions are: image - 23 1/2“ high x 32 3/4“ wide, overall - 30 1/2“ high x 39 1/2“ wide x 1.5" deep. All measurements are approximate. Artist Biography: Eduardo Kingman Riofrio (Ecuadorian, 1913 - 1997) was a 20th century painter, writer and social activist. He was a contemporary of Oswaldo Guayasamin and Camilo Egas. Kingman first studied under Victor Mideros at the Escuela de Bellas Artes (School of Fine Arts), in Quito. He continued his study in Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, and finally at the San Francisco Art Institute, California (1945–1946). American collectors became acquainted with Kingman’s work when he assisted Camilo Egas with the paintings and decorations for the Ecuadorian Pavilion at the New York World's Fair. For twenty years Kingman was the principal professor in Quito, Ecuador at the Escuela de Bellas Artes, as well as, Director of the Museo de Arte Colonial de Quito. In 1940 Kingman founded the Caspicara Gallery in Quito. His original prints and paintings were exhibited internationally in such cities as Paris, Washington, San Francisco, Mexico City, Caracas, and Bogota. Near the end of his career, Kingman was honored with a one-man exhibition of his art at the United Nations, New York. The unifying theme of Kingman's paintings, lithographs, and woodcuts is expressing the social realities of Ecuador's indigenous peoples. He was known as "the painter of hands".
