清晚期至民国时期，中国内忧外患，民生凋敝，尤其1900年庚子国难以后，朝野上下遍寻变革之策，在经济上力图发展民族工业，缩小中外差距。清政府也积极派遣参加、举办国际性的博览会，参加展会的茶叶、织绣、瓷器、漆器等彰显中华民族特色的产品广受欢迎。在此时代背景之下，瓷器等手工艺展现出了新的风貌，雕塑类的人物、佛像以及生活、文房用品大量制作，涌现了魏洪泰、曾龙升等一批著名的瓷塑家，拍品无论造型、装饰技法，均具有这一时期的典型特征。
笔筒胎壁厚重，作松段形，筒壁凹凸起伏，满刻鳞状松皮，借势堆塑枝干，苏武身披斗篷，背倚松干而立，身边的羊群或低头啃草，或跪卧休憩，或攀爬跳跃。笔筒以苍松与苏武为题材，立意不俗。通体施绿、紫、蓝、黄、白等彩釉，釉色亦有清末民初的时代特征。
品相保存完好，颇为难得。
