器型模仿一片卷曲的荷叶，口沿或内卷或外翻，高低起伏。洗内壁描绘的荷叶脉络清晰可见，外壁叶脉则处理为凸凹不平的棱线。作为文人的案头陈列，笔洗需具备一定的观赏性。荷叶的形态与洗的功能十分贴切，故宫藏有多件荷叶洗，乾隆还留下了“咏和田玉荷叶洗”的诗文，可见当时荷叶洗的流行。
