|ProvenanceLikely acquired directly from the artist by Admiral of the Fleet Louis Alexander Mountbatten, 1st Marquess of Milford Haven, GCB, GCVO, KCMG, PC, formerly Prince Louis of Battenberg, the great-grandfather of the current owner.Thence by descent to the collection of Lord Ivar Mountbatten.The large and powerful Blücher was the last armoured cruiser built for the Imperial German Navy and was completed in 1909. She was sunk by ships of the Royal Navy on 24th January 1915, at the battle of the Dogger Bank, with massive loss of life, but is remembered as one of the first British Naval successes of the Great War.
