Provenance:|Purchased from Joe Gerena, 29 April 2003|Mat weights of bronze, often with inlay in precious metals or stone, are a particular feature of the Zhou and Han dynasties. See a bronze mat weight of related form in the British Museum, museum number 1973,0726.29. A pair of closely related bronze mat weights, depicting winged griffins, with very similar casting, design and surface decoration, was sold at Sotheby's New York, 19 March 2002, sale NO7781, lot 114. The casting and inlay styles evident in this mat weight epitomize the elegance of Warring States period metalwork. A bronze finial in the form of a bird with similar aesthetics and execution is in the British Museum, museum number 1947,0712.380.|
