A Mughal style spinach jade vase
Late Qing dynastyFormed with a circular rim and neck rising from an ovoid body raised on a conforming waisted foot with a deeply recessed base, the four leaves descending around the neck and the band of composite flowers and leafy stems surrounding the body all worked in subtle raised relief with line-incised details, the stone of deep leaf green marked with tiny black inclusions.5 1/4in (13.3cm) high
|The small size of the vase suggests is use as a container for incense tools that would have been part of a set to include a covered censer and a circular incense box. For two such jade censer sets preserved in the Qing Court collection, see Gugong Bowuyuan Cang Wenwu Zhen pin Quanji 42: Yuqi 3 (The Complete Collection of the Treasures of the Palace Museum, Beijing Volume 42: Jade, book 3), 2006, nos. 70 & 71, pp. 82-84.
