Document measuring about 12-1/2″ x 8″ indentures Stephen Sabin, a five year old boy from Pomfret, Connecticut to apprenticeship to the family of Oliver Grosvenor. Stephen, whose mother is too poor to feed him, is bound to work as an apprentice until he is twenty-one years old. He is to behave himself and be good and faithful to his new family. His new family promises to provide sufficient food, washing, lodging and teach him to “read, write and cypher… and then give him a new small bible”. Document is witnessed by two citizens of Pomfret and signed and sealed by Oliver Grosvenor. Grosvenor was born in Sturbridge in 1743 and was a Minuteman during the Revolutionary War. Lot is accompanied by a 30″ x 27″ oval gilted gesso framed portrait of a benevolent looking woman. CONDITION: Portrait and framed document are very good overall with several small chips in gesso. Document was not studied out of frame and type of mounting is unknown, laid paper has cracks starting at folds, but text is all discernible.
