胎色黛黑，盏斜壁微弧，小圈足。盏里施满釉，盏外施釉不到底，宋代茶色尚白，以黑釉茶碗为最佳，“取其燠发茶采色也”。宋徽宗著有《大观茶论》，盛赞建窑黑釉碗在点茶时“最为要用”。建窑黑釉茶盌之赏鉴，与日本茶道宗师与收藏家息息相关，在日本，宋代建窑茶盏广得崇敬爱慕，其日文名称「天目」也随之流传千里，成为现今通称此类黑釉器盏之名。
